Physiotherapist, Chiropractor or Massage: Which Do You Need?
Less of a rivalry than the internet suggests. The useful question is not which profession is better, but which approach fits your problem.
The short version
Physiotherapy assesses and rehabilitates movement. Hands-on treatment plus prescribed exercise, aimed at restoring function and stopping recurrence.
Chiropractic focuses on joint movement, particularly spinal, using adjustment to restore motion in restricted joints.
Massage therapy works on soft tissue: muscle tightness, circulation, recovery, tension.
There is real overlap. Physiotherapists use manual therapy including soft-tissue work; chiropractors prescribe exercises; massage therapists often work alongside both. Which is why the professional rivalry you find online is a poor guide to what will actually help you.
Which fits which problem
Choose physiotherapy when there is a functional goal (returning to sport, recovering from surgery, walking again after a stroke) or when the problem keeps returning and needs the underlying weakness addressed. Also when you need a diagnosis rather than treatment of a symptom.
Consider chiropractic for a stiff, restricted joint, particularly in the spine, where you feel locked rather than weak. Many people find adjustment gives quick relief that makes rehabilitation easier to do.
Choose massage when the problem is genuine muscular tension, when you are training hard and need recovery support, or when stress-related tightness is the main issue.
Why the combination often wins
A common pattern in our clinic: a patient with a stiff mid-back and a weak core. Adjustment restores the movement. Strengthening stops it locking up again. Doing only the first means returning every fortnight; doing only the second is slow and frustrating because the joint will not move.
Neither profession has a monopoly on the answer. What matters is that whoever sees you assesses properly first, and is willing to say when the other approach fits better, including saying that you need neither.
What we do
We run all three in the same practice and share notes, so you are not forced to pick a side before anyone has examined you. If you are unsure what to book, call and describe the problem. We will tell you which to start with.

Common questions
Can I see a physiotherapist and a chiropractor at the same time?
Yes, and it often works well when both practitioners know what the other is doing. What does not work is two people treating you in isolation with contradictory advice.
Is chiropractic safe?
For most people, yes, when preceded by a proper assessment. Serious complications are rare. The screening matters: some presentations should not be adjusted, which is why assessment before adjustment is not optional.
Is massage enough on its own?
For general tension and stress, often yes. For a specific injury or a problem that keeps returning, massage relieves symptoms without addressing the cause, and the relief tends not to last.
