What acupuncture is used for

Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles at specific points to influence pain signalling and muscle tension. In our practice it is used most often for pain that has stopped responding to other things: the back that flares every few months, the headaches that arrive every Thursday afternoon, the knee that aches before it rains.

It is not a replacement for a diagnosis. We assess first, and if your problem is mechanical and fixable with rehabilitation, we will tell you that instead of selling you a course of needles.

What a session involves

A short consultation, then treatment lying down with needles left in place for around twenty minutes. Most people find this part deeply relaxing; a fair number fall asleep. Afterwards you may feel loose and a little tired, which passes by the next day.

Cupping

We also offer cupping, which uses suction to lift and decompress soft tissue. It suits broad areas of tightness, upper backs and shoulders especially, and combines well with acupuncture in the same appointment. It leaves circular marks for a few days, which are not bruises and are not painful.

Alongside physiotherapy

Acupuncture works best here as one tool among several. A patient with a stubborn lower back often does best with needling to settle the pain enough that they can actually do the strengthening work that fixes it. Used alone it can be relief; used together it tends to be a resolution.

Common questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

The needles are far finer than the ones used for injections: most people feel a brief prick at most, and often nothing. A dull, heavy sensation around the needle is normal and usually a good sign.

Are the needles safe?

We use single-use, pre-sterilised needles that are disposed of after every treatment. Nothing is ever reused.

How many sessions before I notice a difference?

Most people notice a change within three to five sessions. If nothing has shifted by then, we will tell you honestly that acupuncture may not be the right route for your problem.

Do you offer cupping as well?

Yes. Cupping is often used alongside acupuncture for tight backs and shoulders. Mention it when you book and we will allow time for both.
