Assessment for babies and young children

Parents usually come with a specific worry: not sitting, not walking, always turning the head one way, walking on tiptoes. Sometimes there is a clinic referral; often a grandmother has noticed something.

Assessment is unhurried and unthreatening. We watch how your child moves, handle them gently to check tone and range, and go through their history with you. Then we tell you plainly whether this is within normal variation or worth treating, and we are equally willing to say that nothing needs doing.

Treatment through play

Children do not do exercise programmes. They play, and if the play is designed correctly it demands exactly the movements that need practising: reaching across the midline, weight-bearing through one arm, pushing up from the floor.

So sessions look like games. That is deliberate, and it is why parents are shown how to build the same movements into ordinary daily routines. What happens in the week matters far more than the forty-five minutes with us.

Working with parents

Parents are the ones delivering most of the therapy, so they get taught properly: how to position, how to carry, how to encourage without forcing, and what progress should look like over the coming weeks.

We also try to be realistic about worry. Some concerns resolve on their own, some need a few months of work, and a small number are long-term. Knowing which you are facing is worth a great deal on its own.

Where we offer this

Common questions

My baby is not sitting yet. Should I wait and see?

Milestones vary widely and most late babies are simply late. But an assessment is quick and low-cost, and if something does need attention, starting early makes a real difference. Waiting and seeing is reasonable; waiting and worrying for months is not.

Will my child cooperate?

Paediatric sessions are play. Children work hard when they are engaged and shut down when they are drilled, so the therapy is built into games and it usually does not look like treatment at all.

Do you treat children with cerebral palsy?

Yes, including long-term management alongside whatever other care your child receives. Bring reports from other professionals so we work as one team rather than in parallel.

Can you see my child at home?

Yes, and it often works better. Children are more relaxed and cooperative in familiar surroundings, and we can see how they actually move at home rather than how they perform in a strange room.
