What orthopaedic physiotherapy covers

This is the musculoskeletal core of physiotherapy: the joints, bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles. It covers wear-and-tear problems like osteoarthritis, acute injuries like fractures and tendon tears, and the rehabilitation that follows orthopaedic surgery.

Working with your surgeon

A good portion of this caseload arrives with a protocol from an orthopaedic surgeon: after a knee replacement, an ACL reconstruction or a shoulder repair. Those protocols exist for a reason: tissue heals on a schedule, and pushing ahead of it risks the repair.

We follow them, and we tell you why a restriction exists rather than just imposing it. Patients who understand that the graft is at its most vulnerable around weeks six to twelve tend to respect the limits far better than patients who were simply told not to.

When surgery has not happened yet

Many people arrive having been told surgery is the likely next step. It is worth knowing that for several common conditions (degenerative meniscal tears, a lot of shoulder impingement, knee osteoarthritis) structured rehabilitation performs comparably to surgery for many patients, and carries none of the operative risk.

We will not tell you to avoid an operation you need. We will tell you honestly when a proper trial of rehabilitation is worth attempting first.

Common questions

My orthopaedic surgeon referred me. Do you follow their protocol?

Yes. Bring any notes or protocol you were given and we will work within it, and contact the surgeon's rooms if anything needs clarifying.

Can physiotherapy help arthritis, or is surgery inevitable?

Physiotherapy will not reverse joint changes, but strength and movement work reliably reduces pain and improves function, and often postpones surgery considerably. For some people it removes the need altogether.

How long does frozen shoulder take?

Frozen shoulder is slow, often twelve to eighteen months through its natural course. Treatment focuses on keeping range and managing pain through it, and honest practitioners will not promise you a quick fix.
