Rehabilitation after stroke
Stroke rehabilitation is about relearning. The damaged part of the brain does not regrow, but the nervous system can reorganise, and it does that through repeated, specific, difficult practice. Our job is to work out which movements to target, grade them so they are achievable but demanding, and progress them steadily.
Frequency matters more than intensity in any single session. Two or three visits a week over months does far more than an occasional heroic effort: which is exactly why we treat most neurological patients at home. Transport is the single most common reason stroke rehabilitation stops early.
What we work on
- Walking and mobility: safely, and with a realistic aid if one is needed
- Balance and falls prevention, a fall sets recovery back badly
- Arm and hand function: usually the slowest to return, and the most neglected
- Transfers: bed to chair, chair to standing, in and out of a car
- Everyday independence: dressing, bathing, and moving around the house
Setting honest expectations
Neurological recovery is slow and rarely linear. There are plateaus, and there are weeks that go backwards for no obvious reason. We will tell you what we think is achievable and revise it as we learn how you respond, rather than promising a recovery no one can guarantee.
Families deserve that honesty as much as patients do.

Common questions
How soon after a stroke should rehabilitation start?
As soon as the medical team says it is safe, usually within days. Early rehabilitation is strongly associated with better outcomes, and time lost in the first months is difficult to recover later.
Is it too late if the stroke was a year ago?
No. Recovery is fastest in the first six months, but improvement well beyond a year is common, particularly in walking, balance and everyday function. We will give you an honest view of what is realistic for your situation.
Can you treat at home?
Yes, and for most neurological patients home is the better setting. Practising in the actual environment (your stairs, your bathroom, your doorways) transfers far better than practising in a clinic.
Can family members be involved?
They should be. Whoever supports the patient day to day gets shown how to help safely: transfers, positioning, and how to encourage the exercises without doing them for the patient.
