Staying independent at home
The goal for most older adults is not athletic performance. It is getting out of a chair without help, managing the stairs, walking to the gate, using the bathroom safely, and not being afraid in their own home.
Those are trainable. Strength and balance respond to well-prescribed exercise at any age, and the improvements show up in exactly the tasks that determine whether someone keeps living independently.
Falls prevention
A fall is rarely just a fall. It fractures hips, it triggers hospital admissions, and it frightens people into moving less, which weakens them and makes the next fall more likely. Breaking that cycle early is one of the highest-value things physiotherapy does.
We assess balance and strength properly, walk through the house looking at lighting, rugs, thresholds and bathroom safety, and build a programme that targets the specific weakness rather than issuing generic advice to be careful.
Working with the family
Adult children are usually the ones who call us, often from abroad or from across Nairobi, and often worried. We keep whoever is caring day to day in the loop: what to help with, what to let them do alone even though it is slow, and which changes actually warrant concern.
Doing too much for someone is as damaging as doing too little. We are explicit about where that line sits.

Common questions
My father refuses to exercise. Can you still help?
Often, yes. Resistance is usually about dignity or fear of falling rather than laziness. We start with what matters to him (getting out of his own chair unaided, walking to the gate) because purpose motivates far better than an exercise sheet does.
Is it safe to exercise at his age?
Strength and balance training is well evidenced and safe for older adults when properly prescribed, including for people in their eighties and nineties. The risk of doing nothing is considerably higher: muscle loss accelerates, and with it the risk of a fall.
Can you assess the house for fall hazards?
Yes, and it is part of the first home visit. Loose rugs, poor lighting on stairs, a bathroom with nothing to hold, small changes here prevent serious injuries.
What if there has already been a fall?
Then this is urgent. One fall sharply raises the risk of another, and the confidence loss afterwards causes people to move less, which weakens them further. That cycle is very treatable if caught early.
