What we treat

  • Persistent trigger points and muscle knots
  • Tight upper traps and neck tension
  • Stubborn lower back tightness
  • Calf and hamstring tightness in runners
  • Tension headaches with a muscular origin

What dry needling does

A trigger point is a tight, irritable band within a muscle that is often tender and frequently refers pain elsewhere: which is why a knot in the upper trapezius can produce a headache, and why a tight gluteal muscle can feel like sciatica.

Dry needling puts a fine needle directly into that band. The muscle usually responds with a brief involuntary twitch, after which it tends to release. For trigger points that have not budged under thumbs and elbows, it is often the technique that finally works.

“Dry” simply means nothing is injected. The needle itself is the treatment.

Where it fits

We use it as one component of a session, not as the session. A trigger point that keeps returning is doing so for a reason: a muscle compensating for a weak neighbour, a stiff joint changing how you move, or a workstation quietly wrecking your neck five days a week.

Needling gives you a window of reduced pain and better movement. What we do with that window (strengthening, mobilising, changing the aggravating factor) is what determines whether the knot stays gone.

Safety

Single-use, pre-sterilised needles, disposed of after every treatment. Your physiotherapist will explain which muscles they intend to needle and why, and will screen for the small number of situations where it is not appropriate.

Common questions

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

The needles are the same; the reasoning is not. Acupuncture works from traditional Chinese medicine points and principles. Dry needling targets specific tight bands in a muscle identified by physical examination. We offer both and will explain which we think fits your problem.

What does it feel like?

You barely feel the needle. What you do feel is a brief deep cramp or twitch when it reaches the trigger point: an odd sensation, over in a second, and the sign that the right spot was found.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Mild soreness for a day or two is normal, similar to after a hard workout. Heat and gentle movement help. Severe or lasting pain is not expected, tell us if that happens.

Can I have it on its own?

We do not offer it as a standalone service. Trigger points are usually a symptom of something else: a weak muscle working overtime, or a joint that is not moving. Needling without addressing that buys you a few good days and no more.
